Deep inland at the center of
the Island of Rhodes lies the monastery of the
Archangel Michael at Thari. It is reached from
the pleasant village of Laerma, about 4 km away
through the wooded countryside.
Moni Thari is said to be the oldest
religious foundation on the island and ruins within
the grounds date from the 9th century.

Today, the monastery
is run on thoroughly modern lines, and it even
has its own religious television channel. The
monastery now has two new churches, a fully equipped
camp for students as well as a large hostel where
monks live. Inside the Byzantine church, traditional
Orthodoxy is vividly expressed through the splendid
frescoes and carved wooden altar piece. Moni Thari
is open to all visitors.
